To celebrate this day of our founding, we will gather on the original church grounds of St. Peter Cemetery to offer a Mass of Thanksgiving. (Rain location: St. Peter Church)
FOUNDER'S DAY : Something VERY Special
Have you ever wondered about the history of St. Peter Cemetery? It is actually the site of our original parish church, where our founding families gathered to pray and celebrate mass together, baptize the young and old, receive First Holy Communion, bless their marriages, confirm their faith, and bury their beloved dead, just as we do today. St. Peter Cemetery is the oldest Catholic cemetery in St. Louis County with the first recorded burial in 1835. Over 3,300 known interments include many founding families, priests, Ursuline Sisters, and loved ones of current parishioners. As a parish family we are deeply connected to this holy ground as well as to the 'communion of saints' buried there.
Please plan to join us on Friday August 17th as we gather at the cemetery, in remembrance. It will be a very special celebration as we connect to our own personal communion of saints in prayer. This will be the most fitting of all of our 175th anniversary events, to pause and remember those who brought us to this point in our history, by celebrating the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on the same ground as those who began the little mission church in 1832. |
